Heinen, of Hayden, and Bila, of Overland Park, weighed 5.22 pounds of bass — including a 3.25-pound largemouth caught by Bila that earned Big Bass honors — to beat out the second-place team of Cole Miller and Travis Eckstrom, representing Kickback Club, and Jesse Heflin, of Seaman, who finished in third place as an individual.
Heinen and Bila got first boat draw after finishing first in the overall Kansas B.A.S.S. Nation Youth regular season standings.
“The bite was pretty good in the first one to two hours,” Heinen said. “The big bass we caught was in the first 10 minutes of the tournament.”
Heinen also said the team hopes to fish collegiately at Kansas State or Wichita State some day.
“I have a great partner and boat captain, and we work very well together,” Heinen said. “I’m thankful to (boat captain) Larry Brumley for all of his time helping Brock and I chase our dreams.”
■ Heinen and Bila also finished in fifth place out of 15 boats Oct. 17 at the 2016 High School Tournament Trail Qualifier No. 2, also at Milford Lake.
The team of Backus and Kickhaefer, representing Capital City Club, finished in first place, followed by Remington Wagner and Zach Vielhaure, of Kickback Club, and Miller and Trevor Watts, also of Kickback Club.
