With high-water marks and even higher temperatures, many anglers have found success in recent weeks hooking big blue cats and flatheads in Milford Lake and the Kansas River, also known as the Kaw River.

Cut fish, including carp guts, have been a solid bait of choice in Milford. One angler, who preferred to remain anonymous, suggested using monarch butterflies as bait. I think there’s a reason he chose to remain anonymous. Stick to cut bait, folks.
According to the Farmers’ Almanac’s Fishing Calendar, Sunday evening would be the best time to fish for the rest of the week, with poor fishing days scheduled for Tuesday, Saturday and next Sunday. The next excellent fishing days would be Aug. 10-11 in the mornings, before poor fishing is scheduled to plague anglers from Aug. 12-19. The end of the month is slated to be excellent fishing, though.
The Fishing Calendar “is based on the phase of the moon, the zodiac sign the moon is in, and experience. Local conditions, tides, and weather may affect your fishing experience,” according to the Farmers’ Almanac website.
