This heart-healthy recipe starts out with a pound of deer burger, which will usually make anywhere between four and six patties, depending on how thick you make them. This recipe also should work with elk, bison or other ground-up wild game. Put the thawed meet in a large, metal mixing bowl, and season with pepper, garlic and a light coating of McCormick Grill Mates Montreal steak seasoning. Add four tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil.

A 36-point buck shot in Missouri.
They say good things come to those who wait, but one Midwestern man barely had to wait at all for something truly wonderful to come his way this deer season.

Review: VMC's Neko rig, Tightlines Uvenko worm a deadly combination on bass, crappie

There are many ways to rig up a plastic worm to effectively catch fish, but the Neko rig is perhaps my new favorite.

The rig, which consists of a worm hooked through the middle like a wacky rig and a weight that is screwed into its head, allows you to jerk your worm across the bottom of the area you area fishing in an enticing fashion for bass

When news broke last week of Bass Pro Shops' acquisition of its main rival, Cabela's (NYSE: CAB), the latter's stock price sat at about $55. By the end of trading last Monday, the price had jumped 15 percent to $63.13.

The megadeal between two goliaths of the outdoor-retail industry will result in one giant company operating 184 stores. Bass Pro also owns White River Marine Group, a boat retailer responsible for such brands as Tracker Boats, Sun Tracker, Nitro, Tahoe, Regency, Mako, Ranger, Triton and Stratos.

Confirmed mountain lion sightings have been on the rise in Kansas for the past decade.

From 1990 until 2005, there were no confirmed reports of mountain lions in Kansas, according to Cougarnet.org, though one had been confirmed near the Missouri side of Kansas City. Between 2005 and 2010, however, the number of confirmed spottings in Kansas rose to six. Since 2010, there have been 10 more confirmations, with the 16th and most recent confirmed spotting in late September 2016 in Rawlins County.

Fishing by firelight: Using Neko rigs on a nice fall day

Crappie caught on Neko rig
ORIGINALLY PRINTED IN THE TOPEKA CAPITAL-JOURNAL

Patches of brown dotted parts of the steep, rocky slope that had been washed out by flooding weeks before. A fishing dock had gotten loose from its bank and floated to the corner of the pond, with mossy muk gathered in the shallows nearby along the treeline.

A flurry of activity took place overhead, with crows calling out to each other as the first short breaths of fall began to flow over the pond in the valley below. Barn owls on the hunt called out to each other across miles of forest, and even higher above them several gulls circled the pond, perhaps looking for edible remains on the once-flooded terrain.

Early attempts to use a swim bait to draw bass out of hiding proved fruitless, with large clumps of Hydrilla and other vegetation getting caught in the bait's treble hooks as it scoured the long-untreated waters. I took out my lighter and lit the knot connecting the fishing line to the lure, then searched through tackle for something that could navigate the weedy depths a little better. I came up with a box of Neko weights and another box of Neko hooks, both produced by VMC, and decided a worm might be the best bet on this day.
